What you will need:
  • For those of you joining the online classes, you will need to subscribe to Zoom which is very easy and  free of charge. Just type Zoom into your browser bar and follow the instructions.
  • You will also need a yoga mat, a couple of cushions and a blanket. If you don't have a non-slip yoga mat, fold a blanket in half length ways and use that instead (it is worth investing in a good, ecological yoga mat - they last years!)
  • For those of you coming to the yoga room, you will need to bring your own yoga mat, cushion and blanket.
  • You will need to use a mask when you are arriving and leaving. You can leave the mask off while you are practising.
  • As the room will be ventilated, bring a jumper and socks in case you feel cold.
  • Please do not attend if you are feeling unwell or have been in contact with a confirmed Covid case. In this case you are welcome to join online for that session.
  • Let's all be sensible and responsible and enjoy our time together.

I'm looking forward to seeing you soon

To help you choose your class, a description of some levels is given below.

Picture
Beginners/Progressive Beginners:
practise gentle movements which work all the joints of the body encouraging energy to flow into particular areas while also stimulating and energising the digestive system. The over-all effect is a release of stress and tension as the mind and body relax, along with an improvement in flexibility and energy. Breath
awareness is explored and deep relaxation experienced through yoga nidra.
A firm foundation is established for stronger, deeper practices.
With Progressive Beginners, as there are no complete beginners joining the class, what has been learned in the previous term is consolidated, deepened and expanded. Physical postures become a little stronger,
Surya Namaskara (Sun Salutation) is learned and perfected, & pranayama and  concentration techniques are developed.

Continuation 1:

As students move on in their yoga practice, they are introduced to the Classical Yoga Poses which work directly on the Chakras (See description of Chakras under 'Practices'). Stronger standing poses, including balance poses, are explored and there is a deepening of understanding of the effect of Asana from an energetic point of view.
Students are also introduced to more advanced breathing practices such as Bhastrika and Ujjayi Pranayamas, Yoga Nidra is developed and meditation is introduced.

Picture
Continuation 2:

Once Surya Namaskara is perfected variations are brought in, and the practice may be done with a focus on the corresponding chakra or with a mantra. There is a deepening of understanding of chakras, their location and how to activate them.
Meanwhile, strength and flexibility is increased and awareness deepened by holding postures for longer.
Students continue to practice and develop the Pranayama techniques introduced the previous term. They are combined with mudras and bandhas (See under 'Practices') for a deepening effect.
Meditation and concentration techniques are expanded.

Picture
Established:

Practices become more subtle and meditative. The full Classical Yoga sequence is practised,
which includes inversions and stronger back bends.

In general, the physical postures get stronger while the awareness goes deeper.
Energy practices are developed and expanded, including pranayama and practices from prana vidya.
More time is given to meditations such as Antar Mouna and Ajapa Japa.

Mantra (sacred sound) also features in classes, and Yoga Nidra is longer and deeper.
Generally, the pace is slower and practices more internalised.
The student begins to understand the progression of yoga from the gross to the more subtle.
